X Games 17: World First Front flip on a Motorcycle!!

This past weekend, the inaugural installment of the Nitro World Games took place in Salt Lake City, and as promised by FMX legend, as well as Nitro Circus leader Travis Pastrana, it was an event that set unprecedented records – among them was the double-front-flip, pulled off by Gregg Duffy.

Travis Pastrana has been associated with extreme sports for years, in fact, he’s an innovator in his line of work having helped build the foundation that FMX stands on today. Nitro Circus expanded from a video series to a TV show and finally, the Nitro Circus World Tour that has inspired a whole new generation of young men and women to throw their hat in the action sports ring.

With over 25,000 fans in attendance at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, the Nitro World Games put on a four-hour show with FMX, BMX, skateboard, In-line skate and scooter competitions. Of course, being that this was an event put together by Pastrana and the Nitro Circus crew, they tapped all of their resources to bring in some of the biggest names that action sports has ever seen – Olympic snowboarder Todd Richards, skate legend Tony Hawk, and Pastrana co-hosted NBC prime-time television broadcast in the U.S.

“I was absolutely floored to see the exceptional creativity from these action sports stars and future legends. They proved without a doubt that they are the world’s best,” says Pastrana.

There was an amazing amount of ingenuity going on in every discipline but what has our attention is Gregg Duffy’s first successful double front flip in competitive FMX history. That’s right – Duffy double front flipped a motorcycle. Many who follow FMX or the exploits of Nitro Circus will note that Duffy has been on the hunt for the double front flip for a while. His practice attempts lit social media on fire but at the Nitro World Games, he fired it out and managed to pull it off in spectacular form.

The first FMX front flip was completed in competition by Jackson Strong at X-Games 17 back in 2011 and five years later, Duffy doubled it. The way things have progressed over the years in FMX is astounding considering the fact that all the way back in 2001, Carey Hart was one of the first to ever attempt a backflip in competition and it took a year before Caleb Wyatt completed one while competing. But I suppose that flip tricks have a similar timeline: In 2006, Travis Pastrana, the man behind the Nitro Circus Empire, pulled off a double backflip in competition.

In another five years, who knows where we’ll be with FMX, but we’re positive someone will be coming along to build on what Duffy has done this weekend.

“We are so proud of these incredibly skilled athletes who had fans roaring with approval. They made history tonight,” says Creative Director Mike Porra.

Athletes competed in seven events on a massive layout stretched across the stadium floor and into various sections of the stands. Here are the complete results of the event:
